This is Isabelle de Piaget's story and is one of Kurland's best. If you have read any of the other de Piaget offerings, this one is right up there with Another Chance To Dream (the BEST book ever by Kurland) and This Is All I Ask (the second-best book by Kurland). If you were to cross Another Chance to Dream and This Is All I Ask you'd get Dreams of Lilacs. Isabelle is very much the same type of heroine as her mother, Gwennelyn in Another Chance to Dream, and the tortured anti-hero Gervase de Seger is akin to Christopher Blackmour of This Is All I Ask <~ <~ which SHOULD have its own Kindle and Audible editions, in my not so very humble opinion!

I loved everything about this story. I loved seeing more of the de Piaget family included as well: Miles and Robin especially. Appearances by the de Piaget grandparents, Etienne and Mary, with subsequent familial revelations are not only major plot themes but hilariously funny in the telling of it. And of course Rhys, being always the standard by which all men are measured on the battle or training field, without which no de Piaget novel would be complete minus the dreaded anticipation of having to face him.....Which Gervase discovers once he realizes that the lad he consigned to work in the scullery was none other than the youngest daughter of Rhys de Piaget.

There is plenty of romance, foiled by big brother Robin of course, and a refreshing lack of the paranormal time-traveling/ghosts themes of some of Kurland's more recent offerings which by now seem to be more by rote and lacking the creativity and complicated plots of her earlier works. Rhys and Gwen will always be my favorite Kurland hero and heroine and I would like for them to have another adventure now that the children's stories are all finished.

I admit to being somewhat confused about the title of the book as Lilacs are not the flower that Gervase uses to woo Isabelle. He uses Forget-Me-Nots which his brother mistakes for lavender.

I look forward to each and every new arrival of this series from Lynn Kurland. The de Piaget and MacLeod families are stuff of dreams and I must say, they are my go to books. Very few writers have the guts to write about love and relationships without all of the nonsense (erotica) that you find in most books these days. Lynn Kurland's stories are just sweet, enduring tales of couples who are meant to be together at all costs. (With sometimes help from the Boar's Head Trio matchmakers who were sorely missed in this book.)

Isabel has had her trials of being part of the renowned de Piaget family but still maintains her spunk and wit as well as sweetness. Frankly, I only allowed myself to read one chapter per day so I could continue to enjoy her story for as long as possible. And Gervase de Seger? What more could a maiden ask for? Regardless of all of his grumbling.
I have read every one of Lynn Kurland's books and love them all. It was wonderful visiting Rhy's and Gwen of Artane again. Their family is where everything began.

Isabelle of Artane receives a letter telling her that she must go to France immediately. If not, then her family will be killed. She leaves home dressed as a boy and the ship she is taking sinks while in a storm. After she washes up on shore she is accosted and robbed. Lord Gervase de Seger of Monsaert rescues her but doesn't realize who she is.

Gervase puts her to work in the kitchens when she can't remember who she is but as the days pass she starts remembering. She doesn't tell him though. His younger brothers fall in love with her also. As Gervase helps her unravel the mystery of why she came to France, he also learns who is trying to kill him. Several of Isabelle's family arrive to protect her from Gervase but they have fallen in love.

I really liked how protective Isabelle is of Gervase. She has that unfailing Artane spirit and irrestible charm. If you love Lynn Kurland's books then read this one. I loved and think I just might read Rhys and Gwen's story again very soon!!!
Many of us have been waiting on Isabelle's story for a long time. This one is a straight historical romance... meaning that there was no time-travel, no paranormal, no ghosts, etc. I loved that about this story, just because I'm always up for something different, and it's been many years since Lynn has written a straight historical romance. It's also been awhile since she's written a hero who had so much physical struggle and pain to work through.

Isabelle is, of course, the youngest daughter of Rhys de Piaget, earl of Artane. In the previous books where she appeared, she was overshadowed by her sister Amanda - both because Amanda was the oldest and because Amanda's personality and beauty made her someone who was very hard to ignore. Isabelle, on the other hand, has a much gentler personality.

This is her struggle in this book. Her world has been limited to the shelter and protection of Artane, her father's castle. Yes, it's been a beautiful world of comfort, but it's also resulted in her entire experience of suitors to be men who have heard of her only as Amanda's younger sister and who view her as the consolation prize.

She longs to be more than that -- to be loved for who SHE is, but she's resigned to the fact that it seems unlikely. Her fate changes, however, when she is blackmailed into running away from home... and then her ship goes down... resulting in a concussion that causes temporary memory loss. She is found by a French duke who is himself recovering for injuries from an unknown enemy. Isabelle truthfully says that she doesn't know who she is... and then hides who she is once her memory returns, believing that she is probably safer that way. And thus the plot begins to unfold.

Gervase de Seger happens to be a man who DOES know who Isabelle is by reputation, having crossed blades and lances with quite a few of her brothers over the years. He hasn't exactly been a friend of theirs, though... which means he was most definitely not one of those who showed up at Artane to court the youngest daughter of the earl of Artane. Thus, it takes him a bit of time to put two and two together and figure out just who his beautiful guest really is.

Why four stars?

Well... the blackmailing portion of the plot wasn't quite believable to me. I'm also unclear still about what exactly the blackmailer was hoping to achieve. Did I miss something? In addition, I felt like Gervase's character wasn't entirely complete. His struggles were portrayed very well, and his emotions and love for Isabelle were also portrayed very well. However, I didn't really feel like I knew who he was outside of his past conquests and present pain and suffering and love for Isabelle.

The portions of the plot that had to do with the attempt to take Gervase's title, lands, and castle from him were done very well, however. Everything there fit together, and I really enjoyed the way this plot was so well-woven into the story. I also loved how well everything that Gervase was going through physically was portrayed and described, as well as his recovery.

I also loved how well Isabelle's character was drawn. She had the same gentle nature we've seen glimpses of in past stories, yet she still has the commanding presence and confidence that you would expect from an earl's daughter. (Especially one who had Rhys and Gwen for parents.) I loved the scenes with the children, and I loved the way those scenes played a part in their romance. It was so easy to see why Gervase fell in love with Isabelle.

The characters for Gervase's brothers were drawn really well, too, and I foresee Jocelyn perhaps having his own story some day. -)

Overall, I really did enjoy this love story! It's definitely one of those that will be good for many re-reads in the future.
