THIS REVIEW CONTAINS SPOILERS: I liked a lot of things about this story. While this book was long, it easily kept my attention. This is not always to do since I read a lot of books. I stayed up until 4:00 a.m. reading it despite having to get up for work in the morning. I read the author's 2 ghost books which I enjoyed. Unlike those books, this book had sex scenes although it was not until the very end of the book. My personal preference is that a books contain multiple sex scenes and that they occur sooner than later. Also I only saw a few grammar mistakes which was a plus.

The characters:
Johnny: As a general rule I will not read books where the main characters cheat. It makes me angry and I stop reading. However there are exceptions and this book was one. A review of a book I read stated that Juliet, the h, and Johnny, the cheater, did not end up together. Since it was not the hero who was cheating, I was ok with reading the book because other things about the book appealed to me.

I was extremely relieved that Johnny did not go all the way with the girl he was caught fooling around with. Also, I was relieved that he never slept with anyone else even after Juliet and he broke up. He did fool around with OW after they broke up but could not take that extra step. My opinion of him improved after I read that since meeting Juliet he never slept with anyone else. As weird as it sounds and some readers may not agree with me, another thing I liked was that by the end of the book he still had no moved on. He was still wanting Juliet back and let her and Dean, her new love interest, know that. It bothers me when I am read a book with a love triangle where the one who did not get the girl moves on. Some authors do that to make readers feel better, especially when the person who did not get the heroine is nice. While I understand, to me it feels like their feelings could not have been that deep to begin with if they are able to move on so soon. Also while I know it is not PC and in real life it could be an issue, I loved how jealous and possessive that Johnny was towards Juliet. While Dean show a little bit of possessiveness and jealously, it was very mild in comparison to how Johnny acted towards her. It is like comparing a flashlight to the sun. I wanted Dean to more jealous and possessive but that was not his personality.

Dean: He was not alpha enough for me. I liked that Dean wanted Juliet for years. However, I disliked that he never pursued her or showed interest until after she broke up with Johnny and had been broken up for quite awhile. He liked her first but let Johnny have her. To me it means he did not like her enough. Also like Johnnie was before he meet Juliet, Dean was a manhore. I am tired of manhores. He lost his virginity at age 13 and even when Juliet was free, he was still screwing girls in bushes. Again, it goes back to he did not want Juliet enough to change his behavior. Also, besides his looks he did not seem to have a lot to offer. He was moody brooding and did not like being around other people. He did not even have the excuse of having sometime bad happen in the past. He was not a scarred, just unhappy. Even after being with Juliet he did not change much.

It is interesting because when I first started reading the story I wanted Juliet to end up with Dean. However during writing this review it makes me realize that at some point I changed my mind. I want her to be with Johnny because of the reasons discussed above.

Juliet - She was likable but frustrating. She did not know who she wanted and went back and forth too much as to who she should be with. Her one night stand angered me, which occurred after she had broken up with Johnny. It did not make me mad that she slept with someone else. What made me mad is who she slept with. She lost her virginity to someone who she never showed any interest until the night it occurred. More importantly she was drunk and remembered nothing about the experience. In my opinion, the person she lost it to, is pond scum. He knew she was drunk. He knew that Johnny still loved her and he was close to Johnny but he slept with her anyway. He showed no attraction towards her until the night he slept with her and afterwards seemed to feel nothing about the experience other than regret. What a waste. Her first time should have been with Johnny. If not him, then at least Dean. Instead it was a drunken night that she could not remember and that meant nothing. They did not even use a condom whereas when she slept with Dean, she did. The scene was fade to black and for once I was grateful that no details were given.

The end was HFN. It is possible that the author write a sequel about the same characters. If she did, I may read it. As stated above I read two other books and liked them. However, if she does and the book summary suggests that Johnny has a new love interest then I am passing. I want Juliet to end up with him and in all likelihood, that will not happen.

SLOW BURN eBook Nicole Christie Reviews

Nichole Christie has only written two books, and that is not nearly enough. I picked up her debut, "Falling for the Ghost of You" last year, and I laughed throughout the whole thing. The MC, Violet, narrated the book, and her inner monologue, while hysterical, could sometimes be surpassed by the things she said out loud. For example, she had this rather nasty habit of blurting out very inappropriate things when she was nervous in social situations (for example, "penis". Like at dinner, when she meets her new step-brother. Yeah, that kind of funny).

So based on that, I should have known NOT to drink or eat while reading this book. I do not learn. Those who do not learn from history are condemned to repeat it. Shortly into the book, when the female MC catches her boyfriend cheating on her, and he says he didn't mean to, she responds with

"And what? You tripped and fell into her vagina?"

At that particular moment, I was sipping a Pepsi, which I immediately spewed. Unfortunately, our family's bunny was in the line of spew, and I got her bad. Fortunately, she loves sweet things and happily licked her fur for the next hour. My wife, on the other hand, wanted to know what caused me to do that, and since our teenage son was in the room, there was no way in hell I was repeating the line. She told me I needed more meds. I complied to protect the secret. Needless to say, I slept extremely well that night. Picked up the first moment I woke up.

Now one awesome thing about this book is that it's long - almost 10,000 locations. For $2.99, it's an incredible bargain. You love the book and it lasts.

Juliet was incredible. Besides being wickedly funny, she was tough. She displayed that toughness several times and it made me want to fist bump (I mean, the book does involve the football team). She thinks very inappropriate thoughts. For example, several times she lets her thoughts stray to being the shower with her (sort of) ex and her (sort of boyfriend). Who are step-brothers. So that would be really, really wrong. She's a pervert and she admits it to herself. Don't worry, it doesn't go beyond fantasies - this is not a paranormal werewolf ménage book.

She has problems. Her best friend is a lesbian (which is only a problem because she wants her to fix her up with a girl who (a) Juliet hates and (b) is probably straight. This worries her). That fact that she's apparently an alcoholic worries her even more. Her mother works all the time, so when she's actually home, she's either too tired to talk or she's asleep. Her father has taken up with a much younger woman, and she can hear them getting it on whenever she stays over...which is so not cool.

Best friend Heather is a riot also. She's always offering to beat up Juliet's enemies or perhaps have her uncle do something more...permanent (I love that in a best friend). Johnny is a schmuck. He loves Juliet, he cheats on her, he's incredibly self-destructive. But he's likeable, because no matter what, he will still protect Julie. You kind of forgive him for that cheating part (so does Juliet). Dean is both mysterious and looks like a super model. Every girl in school wants him. They don't get him. Juliet does.

There is one character in the book who is so wicked, so depraved, so evil - her picture should be beside the definition of "Mean Girl". Personally, I would have murdered her. Fortunately, I was not in the book and she is a fictional character. Juliet handles her just fine. I still think she should have taken Heather up on her offer.

I regret that this book is finished. I pray that the author is slaving away, writing her next one (she's allowed to get nutrition...and bathroom breaks. Nothing else). Get this book as fast as possible. Then grab "Falling for the Ghost of You". You will be so happy you did. Just remember the no eating or drinking rule. For the sake of the bunnies, of course.
I loved Juliet! She was feisty and funny. Her thoughts and comments were HILARIOUS. I want to quote so many lines but don't want to spoil it for you guys. My favorite scene was the beach scene where she was eating a chocolate bar.

All the characters really stood out and were interesting in their own right. My only "complaint" would be that I wished there was an epilogue (or more with her and the H).

My book barometer (in case there are others who want to know)...
-No cheating by h/H
-No stupid misunderstanding that got dragged too long and/or because the h/H were too dumb to communicate (Juliet was awesome about this - she confronted, she trusted, she believed)
-A sort of "love triangle" that was done right; ended right. Normally, one part of the triangle would easily move on to another person and all is settled; I loved how this was "resolved" - HOT
-And finally! No cliffhanger! There's a HEA!

Looking forward to reading more Nicole Christie books. Her other one - Falling for the Ghost of You - was funny too and the reason why I bought this with ZERO reviews online. So glad I took the risk.
